Bwakaw
I
made a mental note that if ever I do get the time, I will indulge in
watching
indie films. I always thought these kinds of movies were
more than their
picture of violence, sex and Philippine poverty. It
was a wake-up call that
there are more pressing matters out there
that are rarely addressed other than
mistresses, rich chicks slapping
each other really hard and men in swords living
in magical worlds. In
all honesty, I first thought indie films were doomed for
gloom. But
hooray for Jun Robles Lana's Bwakaw. It challenged the stereotype
that independent films are all about negatives. I saw the trailer of
the film in
Cinema One and knew instantly that I HAVE to watch it.
Movie Review:
Bwakaw
is a story about Rene, an old gay man who came out late in his life.
He thinks it is now too late for love and that life has already
passed by him. He finds companionship on Bwakaw, a stray dog that
hangs around his house. Throughout the movie, he is seen preparing
for his death- buying a coffin and writing his last will. But in a
sudden twist of irony, Bwakaw suffers cancer and dies first. The
whole scenario, although tragic, has led to a bigger realizations and
understanding. Rene eventually finds solace in his new-found meaning
of life and enjoys the little things it has to offer.
The
mix of melodrama and comedy was something to look forward to in this
film. As easy as it is a tear-jerker, it can tickle funnybones as
well. It can be noted that Director Jun Lana wanted the mood of the
movie to be light and accessible to any audience, but at the same
time he aimed to expose some of human's vulnerabilities- topics about
growing old and finding oneself.
As
genius as its plot, the cinematography of the movie was not one to be
left out. The seemingly sepia effect they did gave a sad vintage feel
to the film making the scenes surrender into the same boring routines
the protagonist, Rene, underwent. The colors were brought up as soon
as the movie enters into the more positive events. There were barely
musical accompaniments to the film. But it can be agreed that the
lack of which only adds to the piercing sadness and silence in the
old man's life. All in all, the experience of watching the movie was
like scouring through a bunch of old timeless photographs and finding
a beautiful story behind it.
Casting
Eddie Garcia as Rene was a perfect puzzle fit. Six decades of
experience in the business coupled with numerous awards and
recognition, you would think the 83 year-old has had every role
bagged. But the FAMAS (Filipino
Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) Hall of Famer still has plenty of
tricks up his sleeves as he delivers yet another breathtaking
portrayal. The shift from playing villains in the '50s to a lonely
gay man in his twilight years, Garcia proves to be a driving force of
the movie scene and constantly keeps the people guessing what is next
for the renowned actor-director. Along with other great artists like
Rez Cortez, Bibeth Orteza, Armida Siguion-Reyna, the film becomes a
buffet of talents engaging various critics here and abroad.
Since
its premiere at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival last July
2012, Bwakaw received positive reviews and both local and
international praises. The movie has then been getting a large
following that bids for it to become the first Filipino film to be
nominated in the Oscars Best Foreign Language category- a pretty big
leap for a film whose director had very simple expectations for it.
I
do hope more films like this get produced and shown. It would be a
shame to think that a beautifully-crafted work like Bwakaw is being
celebrated in other cities around the world meanwhile here in the
country, only few people have seen it. As much as John Lloyd movies
make us swoon, it's no crime either to go gaga over films that
showcase everyday conflicts and scenarios. Be it as controversial as
sexuality, as emotional as aging and death or as hilarious as
slapstick comedy, life is there for art to imitate. Are we to be so
focused on clichéd
happy endings and computer generated special effects? Independent
films await your response.

Pitch Perfect..
on three or after three..?
♫
It seems everywhere I look people are going loco over the a cappella craze. Making music with one's mouth is now a trend and Fat Amy's mermaid dancing is on its way to becoming a crowd favorite. Released in 2012, Pitch Perfect features Twilight's Anna Kendrick as Beca, a college freshman who finds herself joining an all-girl singing group that eventually beats the odds after a few mishaps. This laugh-out-loud movie will surely change the way you see music.

10 Petite Actresses
Beautiful women don’t have to be tall to make it in Hollywood and there are at least 10 petite, short actresses who have proven that height doesn’t matter. Each of the actresses below not only made this list for their height, but for how they established themselves as actresses, set apart for greatness.
- Ellen Page (5'1") The Canadian actress and Oscar-nominee first came to us in "Juno" playing an eccentric teenager who finds herself pregnant. Now the rising star is an award-winning actress with roles in "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "Inception."
- Reese Witherspoon (5'1½") This blonde bombshell has been in the tabloids over the past years more for her love life than her acting, but the star still knows how to put on a show. Just take her ditsy role in "Legally Blonde" for example or her roles in" Sweet home Alabama," "Cruel Intentions," "Four Christmases," "Just Like Heaven" or "Walk the Line."
- Natalie Portman (5'3") This short actress made headlines when she shaved her head for her role in "V for Vendetta," but that’s not all the star has done; she had the leading role in the book turned movie "Where the Heart Is," starred as Amidala/Padme in the acclaimed "Star Wars" series and is set to star in 2010’s "Thor."
- Eva Longoria Parker (5'2") Standing next to her NBA star husband makes this little Mexican-American star seem shorter than she is, which is short to begin with. After starring as one of the original desperate housewives, Eva is making a name for herself in the acting biz, especially now that she has dabbled in movies, too.
- Hayden Panettiere (5'1") Starting young, Hayden acted as Sheryl Yoast in "Remember the Titans" and Kate Hudson’s teenage niece in "Raising Helen." Made famous for her role as the spunky cheerleader on "Heroes," Hayden is not just a pretty face. This rising star is also an ambassador for the IUCN Wildlife Foundation, an organization that helps raise funds to support and save endangered species.
- Dakota Fanning (5'3½") Though this young star is still a teenager, Dakota Fanning has made enough of a name for herself to be consider one the amazing petite actresses in Hollywood. Dakota is proving to be a versatile actress with such roles as Jane in the "Twilight" saga, Cherie Currie in "The Runaways," Tom Cruise's daughter in "War of the Worlds", not to mention her heartbreaking role starring alongside Denzel Washington in "Man on Fire."
- Sarah Jessica Parker (5'3") Known for being Carrie Bradshaw in "Sex in the City," Sarah Jessica Parker has always played strong women in both TV shows and movies. Take for example her role opposite Matthew McConaughey in "Failure to Launch" or her humorous role in "The Family Stone." Not to mention, she also started her own fashion line: Bitten.
- Mila Kunis (5'3") Perhaps this starlet’s voice is more recognizable than her body, considering she is the voice of Meg Griffin on "The Family Guy." No, her acting roles speak for themselves. Mila Kunis has starred in "Max Payne," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and not to mention her memorable role as Jackie on "That 70’s Show."
- Salma Hayek (5'2") This Mexican starlet is well-known for her, let us say… assets. Starring alongside funny men Adam Sandler, Kevin James and others, Salma showcased her humorous side in "Grown Ups" while showing her sexy side in films such as "Wild, Wild West," "Desperado" and "Fools Rush In."
- Amanda Seyfried (5'3½") This shorty proved she has a voice in her role alongside Meryl Streep in the musical: "Mama Mia." She has also starred in recent films such as "Letters to Juliet," "Dear John" and "Jennifer’s Body."
