Man, time as usual stopped here in the Philippines and all over the world as we watched pound-for-pound king, Manny Pacquiao versus undefeated challenger Tim Bradley!
I, for one, even considered postponing my bath time just to be in synched completely with the game. But then I remembered, we didn't have the luxury of having pay-per-view stuff so more or less I'm going to have to put up with advertisements and slow-mo's regular cable channels offer.
Fast-forward. Got through with my bath. I come to find my folks crowded within the family radio listening to the Pacquiao fight live stream updates.. It's not even the high-tech radio that's in mall appliances stores these days. It's this big boxy ancient radio- the kind that could be a family heirloom, passed from generation to generation. We were shush-ing each other and getting pissed of when someone makes an unnecessary noise. Just proves how insane we get during Pacquiao fights. You can't blame us, it's a Filipino thing and in some weird way, we're kinda proud of it. This neighbor of ours who's really religious and stuff and like goes to church every Sunday stays the day in their and watches the fights as a family. Awww. That's bonding for you.
So there we were, dependent on a commentator's not-so-lovely-but-oh-so-informing voice. The channels provided late coverages ofcourse so by the time the main event aired, me and my sister were already trying to deal with yet another Filipino loss after the American Idol incident. No one was texting me. All were probably shocked and confused I guessed. I usually get ecstatic text messages after a fight but this time its disappointingly different.
For all those who missed what happened, I don't think I'm in any way qualified to give a review. Haha. But I guess I'll give it a shot. The way I saw it, Pacman started up the round. He gave really good body shots and sent Bradley little bit dizzy gifts. Bradley was circling the ring bunch of times and his defense open giving way for a few jabs and Pacquiao's strong left arm. As the rounds reached 8, tables were slowly turned. Pacquiao gave less shots and his footwork somewhat slower than usual. The Desert Storm got through his defenses but still he managed it. Bradley was coming in with a number of shots although they were not as solid as Pacquiao's.
The next episode really came as a shocker to many. Some Filipino folks were even reported to have stormed out of their respective lives-streaming venues after hearing the result, which was a split decision in favor of Timothy Bradley making him the new WBO Welterweight champ. Many were not satisfied with the decision, claiming that Manny Pacquiao had more of the sure solid hits than Bradley who admitted at the end of the fight to reporter/host Mario Lopez that he was indeed hurt by Pacquiao. It was a good thing a rematch is already in the works and maybe possible some time in November this year. A lot of Pacman fans including myself will surely be eager to watch their former 8-division world champ rise from the ground just like what he did in 2003 with Erik Morales.
A trilogy is in place. So better get your cheering hats on even tighter!
